WEATHERFORD —

Umpires being sought for WP&R softball league

Staff Report

The Weatherford Parks and Recreation Department is seeking individuals interested in umpiring adult slow-pitch softball games for the upcoming season. Parks and Recreation will be offering a United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) umpire certification course on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Holland Lake Park Softball Complex.

The course is free for those interested in working for Weatherford Parks and Recreation. To be considered a certified USSSA umpire, individuals must submit a $60 annual payment for a certification to USSSA, and obtain a USSSA-certified uniform. Successful completion of the course does not guarantee certified individuals will be selected to umpire for the City of Weatherford Parks and Recreation Department, as interviews will be conducted prior to selections.

Weatherford Parks and Recreation hosts league games on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings, and occasionally Saturday tournaments. The league will only use USSSA certified umpires. For more information or to register for the class, interested parties should contact Tyler Sievert at 817-598-4125, or submit e-mail to tsievert@weatherfordtx.gov.

Lady Coyotes back in win column at Cowtown

Staff Report

The Weatherford College softball team removed at least some of the bad taste of recent losses by winning two of three games in the Cowtown Classic Tournament at Fort Worth's Gateway Park on Thursday and Saturday.

On Thursday, the Lady Coyotes won their first match of the tourney with a 3-1 win over Butler College. Kylee Studioso took the circle in the game, shutting down the Lady Bears with 12 strikeouts and collecting the win.

Scoreless after four innings of a pitching duel, WC broke the ice in the fifth with two runs, following with another in the sixth. WC Outfielder Carolyn Clayton and third baseman Casey Cromwell spurred the Weatherford scoring with a home run each.

Thursday's nightcap saw an extra-inning affair that WC lost in the bottom of the eighth to Trinity Valley College. Hitting was plentiful in the match with TV getting 14 hits to WC's 13. But the Lady Coyotes has six errors in the game they failed to overcome.

WC again met Butler on Saturday, taking an early lead with runs in the first, second and fourth innings and beat the Bears, 7-2. Studioso pitched the complete-game win.

The Lady Coyotes offense was driven by doubles from Samantha Alegria, Casey Cromwell and Weatherford High product Makayla Baeza.

After another tourney appearance this week in Houston, the WC women return for a double header at home on Feb. 23, trying their hand again against Howard College, who swept in their first meeting.

Aledo takes loss, but in playoff plans

Staff Report

Bearcat sophomore Taylor Johnson racked up 18 points as the game’s high scorer, as Aledo was just a weak second quarter away from dealing the Birdville Hawks a blow in their quest for an outright district championship. But the 12-point deficit was too much for the Bearcats to overcome in a 60-52 loss. Aledo has already clinched a playoff spot, but can improve their seeding with a win over Brewer.

Poll

The Air Force Academy recently graduated their first openly gay cadets. What does this signify?

Nothing. There have always been gay cadets, they just haven't been open.
A step backward. Sexual orientation issues shouldn't be a part of the military.
A step forward. The military needs to be open to people of all backgrounds.
No opinion.
