Aledo cruises through area match with drubbing of Saginaw

Staff Report

The Ladycats jumped out to a 18-3 lead before Saginaw finally sank its first field goal with less that two minutes left in the opening quarter on Thursday, as Aledo dominated in a Class 4A, Area-round contest at Chisholm Trail High School.

Aledo enjoyed a 33-15 lead at the half, with Alyssa Dry owning the hot hand, scoring 12 points in the opening quarters. Dry finished as Aledo’s top scorer, with 15 points. Senior Mallory Powell added 10 for the Ladycats.

The Aledo girls kept the pressure on after the break, cruising to a 59-30 win over the Lady Rough Riders.

Dry sat out for much of the third quarter, with foul trouble, but her teammates took up the slack until the guard re-entered the game in the final period.

Aledo advances to the regional quarterfinal round, new territory for the Ladycats, and will meet up with the winner of the Granbury-Wichita Falls Rider Area match, set for Friday.

Lady Eagles advance with dominating victory over Sunnyvale

Staff Report

Brock’s Lady Eagles began postseason play on Thursday, just as they ended district play recently — methodically dismantling its opponents. Sunnyvale could not stem the Brock tide as the Lady Eagles rolled to a 63-28 victory in Class 2A, area-round play at Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth.

Brock led by a 12-point margin by the end of the first half, increasing their lead throughout the rest of the contest, as the Lady Raiders could find no answer at either end of the court.

Advancing to the regional quarterfinal round, Brock will play the winner of the Howe-Maypearl area match at a site and time to be determined.

Lady Coyotes roll past Hill College

Staff Report

The Weatherford College women’s basketball team improved its conference mark to 9-1 on Wednesday, getting offensive contributions from the starters and the bench, with a 90-58 win. Eleven players put points on the board, with five of those putting up double figures, as the Hill defense was harried from all directions.

Guard Bre Brooks led the effort with 13 points and Itiana Taylor followed with a dozen. Cleyder Blanco, Alexia Kelley and WHS grad Kaylee Brooks added 10 points each, as the Lady Coyotes jumped ahead early, leading by 21 at the break.

Tied with Collin County at the top of the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference, WC will host Cisco on Saturday, with a 2 p.m. start. If the lead teams hold service over the next two games, Collin and Weatherford will play for the conference lead on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Crumm-Graber Center.

Porcupines-Rams to square off in seed match at Roo gymnasium

Staff Report

Knotted with 7-3 marks at the end of District 6-3A play, Springtown and Mineral Wells look to better their respective bracket positions before entering postseason next week. Both swept by state-ranked Kennedale in district play, the teams split their home-away encounters, and will play the rubber match on Friday, to determine the second and third seeding.

The second tier of the district was clearly defined throughout the schedule, as Pojo and the Rams blew past the rest of the field. The two teams could have opted for a coin flip, but chose instead, to settle the seeding on the court.

Many teams play a warm-up game before the start of postseason anyway, so the match satisfies that desire. And the winner of Friday’s game, should it advance deep into the bracket, would not have to face district-mate Kennedale again until the Region I finals. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., at Weatherford High School.
