Roos runners show well at Haltom cross country relay event

Staff Report

The Weatherford High School cross country teams competed Haltom’s six-mile relay event last weekend, making a good showing. Teams were comprised of three members, running two miles each in the unique format.  The Weatherford girls’ team, consisting of Mackinsey Flores, Allie Meeks and Rachel Park had a seventh-place finish out of 42 teams. Nathan Collier, Caleb Ferguson and Omar Ovied carried the WHS boys to a ninth-place result, vying with a field of 43 teams.

Both teams resume competition on Friday, set to run in several events hosted by Saginaw High School.

 

WHS tennis preps for district start with Mansfield matches

Staff Report 

The Kangaroo varsity tennis team played a tough Mansfield Legacy team Tuesday, coming up on the short end of the match count, 4-15. The Roos success came from two wins in boy’s singles and a pair of boy’s doubles matches. On Friday, Sept. 10, the Weatherford netters host North Crowley, which will open District 4-5A play for fall team tennis. Start time for the matches is set for 4 p.m. at the WHS tennis courts.

 

Springtown improves to 15-4 with win over Denton High

Staff Report

After splitting the first two games, the Lady Porcupines sharpened their focus in the final two, mastering the Denton girls with a 3-1 win, Tuesday at Denton. Led by Kendal Davis’ nine kills, Pojo handily took care of the Lady Broncos in the final games, resulting in a 25-19, 18-25, 25-14, 25-17 tally.

Kedall Hayes provided the sets on the night, with 25 of the 26 assists recorded for Springtown. Hailey Henderson kept rallies alive with a team-leading 18 digs, complimented by Tessa May’s 10. Rebecca Dauenhauer led the SHS girls with nine blocks.

Springtown travels to Crowley on Friday for a 6:30 p.m. match, and takes on the Lady Hounds at Peaster on Tuesday before beginning 5-4A district play on Friday, Sept. 10, against Byron Nelson at Trophy Club.

 

TCA looks to notch win over Universal after drubbing Glenview

Staff Report

Trinity Christian Academy will host Irving’s Universal Academy Friday, on the heels of an impressive start last week against Glenview Christian. Putting up 33 points in the first half, the Eagles cruised to a 47-20 final score. With a well-balanced offensive attack, Trinity Christian netted 325 yards of total production. Nick Bogdanoff led the aerial assault, completing 13 of 20 passes for 165 yards and a pair of touchdowns. 

Bogdanoff’s favorite receiver was Parker Mays, who pulled in seven catches. Mays also made his presence on defense felt, picking up an errant Glenview fumble and returning it 64 yards.

TCA meets Universal Christian at 7:30 p.m., to be played at Aledo Middle School.

 

Lady Monarchs prevail in five games against Millsap girls

Staff Report

After dropping the first two games against the Lady Bulldogs Tuesday, 14-25, 20-25, Poolville settled in to take the last three games, and the match, 27-25, 25-21, 15-11. After an open date on Friday, the PHS girls have a scheduled rematch with Saint Jo on Tuesday, who they beat last Friday. Millsap is slated to play in the three-day Peaster tourney beginning Thursday.

 

Aledo-Weatherford undercards slated for Thursday night

Staff Report

The Weatherford junior varsity football teams will meet Aledo's JV squads Thursday, beginning at 5:30 p.m., at Kangaroo Stadium.

The freshman teams will meet on Thursday, as well, and will play at Bearcat Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.

    When Jeff Lightfoot started the Weatherford College baseball program almost a decade ago, he wasted no time in building a winner — and fans have gotten used to the Coyotes being a part of the postseason.

    So with the start of each season comes high expectations, all with the hopes of getting that elusive first Junior College World Series berth. Lightfoot has a JUCO World Series title as a coach at Eastfield College in Mesquite in 2001.

  • Trooper Reynolds LOI WC snags WHS diamond standout

    It is not the first time, and certainly will not be the last that a metaphorical baton, in this case, a baseball student-athlete has been passed from Weatherford High School to Weatherford College. Groomed on the diamond for the past four years by WHS head coach Terry Massey and assistant Jason Lee, senior Trooper Reynolds confirmed his scholastic and athletic intentions at the next step on Friday, signing a national letter-of-intent to Weatherford College.

  • WC Softball Opener - Cromwell putout Softball era begins at WC

    The crowd on hand Saturday at the Weatherford College Softball Complex was already standing-room only for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, a full 30 minutes before the first pitch was thrown to open the inaugural regular season of the WC Lady Coyotes softball team. Fans and well-wishers were strewn from the concessions mezzanine behind the first-base line, through the packed stands and even into the Lady Coyotes dugout.

    Arlington Lamar hill too steep for Roos

    Staff Report

    Weatherford found some offensive punch in the fourth quarter of their District 4-5A match at Arlington Lamar on Friday, but the hole was too deep by then, as Weatherford dropped the contest to the Vikes, 57-39.

    Greg Lanier and Nick Bogdanoff are seniors at Trinity Christan Academy, and were selected to participate in the 2012 Texas Private Schools Six-man Football All-Star Game. The pair have been chosen to suit up for the North All-Stars team.

    The Roo varsity boys basketball team made good on an opportunity to notch a victory Friday, as they hosted Arlington Sam Houston in a District 4-5A contest. Pitting a pair of teams looking for a district win, Weatherford left little doubt early on who would leave with a ‘W’, winning the game, 49-26.
