WEATHERFORD —
Springtown jumps ahead in first half, tops Alvarado, 31-21
Staff Report
The Springtown Porcupines blanked the Indians in the first half at Alvarado Friday, while finding the end zone twice to take a 14-0 lead into the locker room. Adding another pair of scores in the third quarter, Pojo built an insurmountable lead, taking the non-district contest, 31-21.
Porcupines running back Cameron Dauenhauer began the scoring with just over a minute left in the opening period with a 3-yard push. Ian Bickel's point-after kick was good, and Springtown was off and running. Dauenhauer led all rushers on the night, finishing with119 yards in 21 attempts.
Springtown's offense offered up a balanced attack, coupling 33 runs with 32 tries up top. Pojo quarterback Caden Cowan tossed 31 of those passes, completing 17 for 146 yards. Pojo's defense also contributed to the cause with a pick-six, when defensive back Brady Weaver put a rude ending on an Indians' drive, intercepting a pass at the 'Pines 10 and covered all 90 yards for the score.
By the end of the third, Springtown had built a 28-6 margin, making the Indians' fourth-quarter touchdowns inconsequential. Bickel kicked a 28-yard field goal for Springtown in the final quarter to accompany his four PATs. The senior wide receiver was also Cowan's favorite target on the night, catching seven passes for 82 yards.
After two victories on the road to start its season, Springtown celebrates its home opener with homecoming festivities Friday, while hosting the Bridgeport Bulls.
