Parent’s Night, and the final game of the season for the Weatherford varsity brought a formidable cheering section to Kangaroo gymnasium on Tuesday. The home crowd was on hand to honor its seniors, as well.
The District 3-5A finale brought Arlington Sam Houston to town, looking for its first district win, against a harried Roo team in a talented district looking to end its season on a positive note.
And the night belonged to Weatherford, who matched, and surpassed the Texans in a final quarter that saw 46 total points scored. The Roos topped Sam Houston, 62-57.
The Texans took the early advantage, working the ball to the inside and compiling a rebounding edge to build a six-point lead by the end of the first period.
Helped by long-range shots from Collin Boswell and Sam Couch, the Weatherford boys returned the favor in the second stanza, and owned a 24-20 lead into the halftime locker room.
Junior post Ryan Merrill helped the WHS cause, drawing fouls under the basket and sinking 4-of-4 from the line.
Guard Tony Rodriguez led the offense before the break with six points, doubling that in the second to lead the Roos’ scoring with 18 points. Weatherford also got help from multiple players, as seven contributed to the effort in the first half.
The intensity of play in the third period reflected the desire of each team to end their season on the upswing. The defense at both ends was very active, and the physical play became an integral part of the contest.
Midway through the quarter, Weatherford increased its lead to six, but a surge by the Texans squared the game at 35-all with a half minute to play.
But the Roos took a slim lead into the final quarter and held off the Texans’ surge with some offensive prowess of its own. Also leading the charge for the Roos were Collin Boswell and Ryan Merrill, with 16 and 10 points, respectively. WHS improved to 2-12 to finish their district slate.
