Greyhounds’ offense falters in loss to district nemesis

—

By GREG WEBB

DECATUR — A Peaster free throw early in the third quarter was a fitting metaphor for the Greyhounds’ evening, as they met up with district foe Ponder for a third time, this season. The ball caromed off the rim, the backboard and kissed the rim another four or five times before trickling ineffectively off the side of the basket.

A pair of threes in the first period and another couple in the fourth were all Peaster could manage in a tough shooting night against the Lions, as the Hounds ended their 2012-13 campaign in a Class 2A, regional quarterfinal match at Decatur High school, falling 56-42.

Trading impressive defensive stops at the start of the game, the score was tied at 11 by the end of the opening stanza, though Peaster only got the benefit of a couple of free throws in the period. Meanwhile, Ponder was toeing the line with regularity through the first half, and the Hounds long-range shots were off the mark.

Ironically, Peaster’s paltry three points in the second quarter were at the foul line, as Draven Tell sunk 3-of-4.

But the production did not bode well for Peaster’s outlook, with the Lions scoring 13 in the period to lead by 10 at the half.

Ponder shooting remained hot out of the locker room, as it scored the first seven points before the Hounds could answer in the third period. Peaster quickly reduced the margin, but  baskets remained elusive and inconsistent for Peaster, and closing the gap became an urgency of more 3-point attempts as the fourth quarter drained away.

Tell led the Peaster scorers, with 11 points, and though seven Greyhounds recorded points, none could establish a hot hand down the stretch.

In other boys’ playoff action on Tuesday, Brock took an early advantage against Whitney in another Class 2A, Region II quarterfinal, beating the Wildcats, 78-50 in a rout in Glen Rose.

In Cisco, Poolville took on Stamford in 1A regional match, falling to the Bulldogs, 64-57.
