Brooks, McKinley head up NTJCAC All-Conference list

—

Staff Report

The 2013 All-Conference Women’s Basketball Team is out for the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference, and Weatherford College’s Bre Brooks and Bob McKinley are at the top of the list.  Brooks won Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors, while McKinley was named Coach of the Year.

Brooks led the NTJCAC in scoring (17.7 points per game), assists (7.9 per game) and steals (2.7).  The freshman point guard from Tyler Lee helped lead WC to a conference championship and a 22-4 regular season record.

McKinley won his second straight Coach of the Year Award, and his 10th overall.  Coaching at WC since 1977, McKinley is the winningest active basketball coach in the nation at the two-year college level.

Joining Brooks on the All-Conference first team was Itiana Taylor, another freshman standout.  Taylor averaged a double-double, leading the conference in rebounds (10.6) and ranking fourth in scoring (14.7).

JohVonna Darrington was a second team selection, and Cleyder Blanco, Desiree King and Alexia Kelly were honorable mention All-Conference.

In the first round of conference tournament play on Wednesday at Lubbock Christian University, Darrington scored a game-high 29 points as WC throttled Odessa, 95-64. Brooks added 19 points and 10 assists.

Weatherford (23-4) shot an impressive 62 percent from the field while holding Odessa (20-8) to 28 percent shooting.

The Lady Coyotes face New Mexico Junior College (23-5) Friday at noon in the semifinal round, also at Lubbock Christian.  New Mexico defeated McLennan 67-54 Wednesday.

Along with a chance to play for a regional championship, the winner of the Weatherford/New Mexico game will advance to the NJCAA tournament, as a minimum of two Region V teams will receive an invite this year to nationals in Salina, Kansas.

Friday’s game can be viewed via online streaming at www.psblive.com.
