I-20 worker impaled by rebar

PARKER COUNTY — A worker in the construction zone on Interstate 20 near the Millsap exit was seriously injured Friday morning in an accident and was flown to the hospital by air ambulance after being extricated from a vehicle.

A man in his 30s hauling asphalt reportedly ran into rebar with his vehicle, according Millsap Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Jeff Edwards. The rebar went through the headlight and dash, through the man’s leg and out the back of the truck, he said.

“It was pretty gruesome,” Edwards said.

Volunteers from Brock-Dennis, Millsap and Greenwood fire departments were able to free the man by cutting the rebar on both sides of the man’s leg with a portable band saw, according to Edwards.

After they stabilized the man’s leg, he was able to get himself out of the truck with help, Edwards said.

Greenwood helped with landing Air Evac at the construction site and interstate traffic was not disrupted, according to Edwards.

The band saw, purchased by the Brock-Dennis department after a somewhat similar incident several years ago when an electrician’s band saw was used, provides less vibration than other saws, according to Edwards.

“It’s one of those things [where] you buy the tool and hope you never have to use it,” Edwards said.

The Brock-Dennis and Millsap fire departments work well together and are familiar with each other’s equipment because they train together and are often called together to accidents on the interstate highway in that area, Edwards said.

The Air Force Academy recently graduated their first openly gay cadets. What does this signify?

Nothing. There have always been gay cadets, they just haven't been open.
A step backward. Sexual orientation issues shouldn't be a part of the military.
A step forward. The military needs to be open to people of all backgrounds.
No opinion.
