WEATHERFORD —
Having prayer at meetings will be a discussion point of executive session during Tuesday night’s council meeting.
City Manager Jerry Blaisdell said the item is a consultation with City Attorney Ed Zellers concerning public invocation, which is allowed under Section 551.071 of the Texas Government Code. The council voted earlier this year to allow public invocation before meetings.
Blaisdell said the city is still receiving complaints from both sides of the issue. He said the legal aspect is very convoluted on what constitutes an invocation. Litigation on the matter has been threatened via a letter, Blaisdell said.
“I don’t think anything is going to change on it,” Blaisdell said. “(The council) will receive an update
from its attorney about its obligation on the matter. We’re simply doing a followup on some of the things that could happen.”
Several members of the Parker County Ministerial Alliance expressed their desire of an invocation during meetings in June. A number of government entities have invocation before meetings throughout the area.
Also scheduled for executive session is continued discussion on economic development negotiations with Weatherford Healthcare Holdings, LLC and Weatherford Entertainment, LLC.
