Museum to celebrate 10 years

WEATHERFORD — The Museum of the Americas is honoring a milestone in its history. As part of the celebration of its 10th anniversary, the museum will host a panel discussion March 3 as well as displays of some of the owners’ favorite pieces in its “Best of the Collection.”

The evening will begin with a panel discussion, A Collector’s Passions, Paradigms and Problems, featuring five participants, at 7 p.m. The discussion will take place at the Twentieth Century Club, 312 S. Main Street, followed by the opening reception at the museum, 216 Fort Worth Highway.

Others include Helmut Horchler, whose 30-year collection of Native American art includes sculptures, pottery and drums; his wife Hilda, whose passions are nativities, Native American jewelry and Mexican folk art; Morris Matson, who focuses on early Texas art and art produced in Fort Worth at least 40 years ago; and Douglas Harman, whose passions include WWI aviation, Fort Worth memorabilia, Civil War items and more.

Katie Sherrod, author, writer, producer and commentator, will serve as the moderator.

“We walked through and chose pieces that we liked the best,” owner Elizabeth Lawrence said. “Every piece has its own identification as well as why it was chosen.”

The collection will focus on items from the 20th century, but also includes pieces before and after.

“Some of the items are good in any collection,” owner Harold Lawrence said. “Some are noted because of their rarity and uniqueness.”

The cumulative collection serves as an attempt to expose and educate visitors to the diverse range, vitality and artistic merits of culture and folk art.

“This museum is not a museum of specimen pieces,” Lawrence said. “It’s a museum of ethnographic collections.”

“Ethnography is the study of different cultures as well as things that identify with that culture,” owner and husband Harold Lawrence added.

Harold Lawrence, who has been collecting art for more than 50 years, is one of the panelists.

The Air Force Academy recently graduated their first openly gay cadets. What does this signify?

Nothing. There have always been gay cadets, they just haven't been open.
A step backward. Sexual orientation issues shouldn't be a part of the military.
A step forward. The military needs to be open to people of all backgrounds.
No opinion.
