Fire claims WISD building

WEATHERFORD — A vacant building in the 100 block of North Denton Street burned late Wednesday night in a fire.

Firefighters from Weatherford, Greenwood, Central, Hudson Oaks and Willow Park battled the blaze that claimed much of the structure. The building reportedly provided classroom space for Weatherford ISD until the current high school was built but had been boarded up in recent years.

The smoke was heavy and black when Weatherford firefighters first arrived on scene, Weatherford Fire Chief Paul Rust said.

Because the building was vacant, they decided not to send crews inside, according to Rust. Instead firefighters fought the fire from the outside.

Emergency personnel shut down portions of Denton Street, Line Street and Jameson Street as crews worked early into the morning.
