Brock loses to White Oak by two

FROM STAFF REPORTS

AUSTIN – After being down by as many as 12 points in the first half, the Brock Eagles rallied in the second, taking a lead late in the fourth quarter, before losing to White Oak, 56-54, Saturday afternoon in the Class 2A high school boys basketball title game.

Brock last to White Oak by nine points last year in the championship game. White Oak (37-1) won its fourth state boys basketball championship.

Brock ends the year with a 32-7 record. The Eagles were trying to follow the Brock Lady Eagles, who won the Class 2A girls title a week ago on the same Frank Erwin Center floor on the University of Texas campus.

Brock took a brief 50-49 lead with 2:40 to play. However the Roughnecks answered with a quick three-pointer to retake the lead.

The Eagles' Luke Hummel (18 points) tied the game at 54 with 57.4 seconds left. But White Oak killed most of that time before Chris Anderson hit a running layup with 2.6 seconds left for the final score. Brock's inbound pass was errant and picked off.

A big shot came at the buzzer that ended the third quarter when White Oak hit a three-pointer from nearly halfcourt to take a four-point lead going into the final stanza.

The Democrat will have more on this story this afternoon and in Sunday's print and online editions.
