PARKER COUNTY —
With football and volleyball seasons fully under way, another group is also in the throws of competition.
Both Weatherford High School and Springtown High School marching bands recently took part in the area round of the UIL Marching Contest last weekend.
The Sound of Springtown, performing its program Scenes of Simple Gifts, finished third out of 28 teams to advance to the state level Nov. 5.
“Our students began practicing in early August, hoping to earn the privilege of competing at the Alamo Dome,” Springtown superintendent Mike Kelley said. “And the hard work has paid off.”
With around 120 students involved, fifth-year band director Chris McLelland said he was pleased with the results of the contest.
“We did great by advancing to state,” he said. “This was the third time our marching band has made it to the state level. The first time we did it in 2003, and again in 2005.”
The Sound of Springtown has also received 22 straight Division One ratings throughout its regional experience.
The group leaves for San Antonio Sunday, and performs Monday at 2:30 p.m., with the finals beginning at 6:15 p.m.
The Weatherford Fightin’ Roo band finished 22nd out of 25 teams at regionals.
“We had a good performance and it was definitely one of our better ones,” director James Buckner said. “I’m happy with the way it ended. It was pretty tough competition.”
Despite the finish, the band received several Division One ratings from multiple judges for the sixth year in a row. In the last few years, the Roos have racked up several other accolades, including 24 students qualifying for the All-Region band and 74 First Division medals at solo and ensemble competitions last year.
With the Sound of Springtown moving on to its next competition, the Weatherford Fightin’ Roo band is gearing up for more performances as well, with a Veteran’s Day Parade appearance Nov. 10 and a holiday concert slated for Dec. 17.
“We’ve still got a couple of football games to go too,” Buckner said. “It really doesn’t stop.”
UIL All-Region competition begins in December, with solo ensemble competition in February.
