Teskey’s saddles up for the 13th time at S.D. stock show

FROM STAFF REPORTS

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Teskey’s Custom Saddle Shop started in a double-wide garage in Weatherford 14 years ago. Manager Jeff Hartong has been making the trip to The Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City, S.D., for 13 of them.

“This (The Black Hills Stock Show at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center) has always been a good venue for us,” Hartong said. “Last year and this year have both had real good turnouts.”

Teskey’s now has about 75 employees, Hartong said. All of Teskey’s saddles are made in their Weatherford shop.

Hartong says that one of the reasons for Teskey’s success is that “we offer a very competitive saddle for a lot less money.

We make a fair margin and sell a lot of them. And, we will take a used saddle in trade.”

Teskey’s makes a saddle for everything from barrel racing to ranch work, and everything in between.

“We build them according to how they’ll be used, and we will do custom orders as well,” Hartong said.

The company uses exotic leathers like silk-screened stingray, ostrich, elephant, shark and alligator.

“And we have a reputation for having among the most sought-after kids’ saddles in the industry,” Hartong added.

The Black Hills Stock Show’s Trade Show runs through Saturday.
