Springer sworn in as Dist. 68 representative

Drew Springer Jr., a 1985 graduate of Weatherford High School and University of North Texas alumnus, took the oath of office as District 68 Texas State Representative Jan. 8 in Austin.

Springer will represent the largely rural 68th District that stretches from Cooke County to the east, Crosby County to the west, Fisher to the south and Wheeler to the north. The 22-county district extends more than 20,000 square miles and is important to rural Texans’ interests.

District 68 produces more than 20 percent of the state’s agriculture products and more than 20 percent of its energy.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to officially represent the citizens of District 68,” said Springer.

Springer makes his home in the small Cooke County town of Muenster with his wife, Lydia, and their three children Austin, Grant and Kate.

“I know what it’s like to make a mortgage and utility payment, to worry about healthcare for my children and to do a family budget at the kitchen table,” said Springer. “After receiving my accounting degree from UNT, I worked my way up to company controller of a railcar company, director of budgeting, vice president of leasing and management to eventually running three companies and having over 1,000 employees. Eight years ago I joined my father in the financial services industry representing a leading agricultural company.”

Springer, along with Rep. Phil King, R-Weatherford, and the other 148 state representatives, will have 140 days to propose, vote and pass legislation before the House adjourns on the last day of May.

On Thursday Springer was appointed to both the House Agriculture & Livestock Committee and Land & Resource Management Committee for the 83rd Legislative Session.

Agriculture and Livestock changed this session to include rural economic development. This gives Springer a strong voice for his district.

“Ag is a huge part of the economy and culture of HD68, so it is an honor to be appointed to the Agriculture & Livestock Committee,” said Springer. “From day one, I lobbied hard for a position on this committee, and I am thrilled the Speaker gave me one of just seven spots.”
