The FBI is seeking information on a serial killer who authorities believe passed through Parker County, including Aledo and Azle, in February 2012 prior to his capture the following month and suicide in jail on Dec. 2.
Diego Rodriguez, special agent in charge of the Dallas division of the FBI, is requesting the public’s help in obtaining information on the travels and activities of Israel Keyes, who reportedly confessed to multiple kidnappings and murders across the United States between 2001 and March 2012. Authorities also believe he is responsible for two bank robberies they have corroborated and others he confessed to.
During his time in the North Texas area last year, the FBI believes Keyes was driving a rented blue 2011 Kia Soul with Texas license plate CN8-M857.
The National Bank of Texas in Azle believes Keyes was responsible for robbing the bank at gunpoint on Feb. 16, according to president Steve Parker. During the robbery, a man wearing a hard hat, a surgical mask and sunglasses displayed a handgun, making everyone get on the floor before leaving with an unspecified amount of currency.
Keyes reportedly confessed to the kidnapping and killing of 18-year-old Anchorage woman Samantha Koenig Feb. 1 and Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex, Vt., earlier, as well as five other unidentified victims over the years, including four in Washington and one on the East Coast. Authorities believe he may have killed others, as well.
Investigators say Keyes did not know his victims prior to their abductions.
“He described several remote locations that he frequented to look for victims – parks, campgrounds, trailheads, cemeteries, boating areas, etc.,” the FBI wrote.
Keyes reportedly left buried caches across the U.S. containing weapons and items used to disposed of bodies.
He was captured in March after he reportedly withdrew money donated for Koenig’s ransom.
