Animal shelter records record adoptions

Over 50 dogs and cats found new homes at the Weatherford-Parker County Animal Shelter over a four-day period. From Feb. 12-16 the shelter held a Valentine’s Day adoption special.

“It was an outstanding adoption week,” said Dustin Deel, interim director of Animal Services with the shelter.

Deel said the promotion was such a hit, he has extended the Valentine’s Day special through the end of February.

“It’s important to keep the momentum going. We are just starting to get into puppy and kitten season where we will be inundated with babies of all kinds. We have so many great animals that deserve a second chance.”

The Weatherford/Parker County Animal Shelter “Valentine’s Special” makes all dog and cat adoptions just $40. This covers sterilization, vaccinations, microchip and all the love they will bring your family. Deel stressed the importance of spay and neutering your animal.

“Spaying and neutering is a community problem that saves many animals lives,” he said. “It is important to build a relationship with a veterinarian and always have your animals spayed or neutered.”

There have been several skunk sightings at night in the area and Deel says it’s time to start thinking about rabies vaccination.

“We are approaching skunk-breeding season, so it’s very important to make sure your animals are current on rabies vaccinations,” Deel stated. “Not all skunks have rabies, but they are considered a high-risk animal. When they are out roaming around, it increases the likelihood hood of them spreading it to your pets.”

The Weatherford-Parker County Animal Shelter’s hours of operations are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended hours on Wednesday and Friday until 6 p.m. You can visit the shelter’s website to see the pets available for adoption at www.weatherfordtx.gov/animal.

For those who can’t adopt, but would still like to help, the Weatherford-Parker County Animal Shelter always appreciates donations of cat litter, dog food, cat food, trash bags and cleaning supplies. The shelter will also recycle your soda cans.
