United Way director gone

WEATHERFORD —

Cindy McDaniel was hired by the Parker County United Way board in April and started her job as executive director in mid-May. On Thursday, July 22, she and the board said they mutually parted ways.

“Cindy is not our executive director any longer,” confirmed Dennis Clayton, president of the organization’s volunteer board of directors, on Wednesday. “We appreciate all she’s done for us.”

McDaniel would not add more as to why she left, but did agree that it was a mutual decision.

“I wish the organization the best,” she said, adding she will still contribute to United Way as a community member in any way that she can.

She noted she’s proud of the accomplishments she made while with United Way. Both Chili’s and On the Border restaurants have pledged to donate a percentage of their sales during a couple of week nights to the United Way.

McDaniel previously worked as the director of sales and marketing for the Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott in Weatherford. It’s a job to which she is going back. It was just “one of those things,” McDaniel said, where they called her and asked if she was interested in coming back.

The previous United Way executive director, Susan Sodek, was there for three years.

The job itself is a lot of hard work and community relations, Clayton said, especially during the four months of the year when the organization is raising funds to help the 18 agencies to which it gives money.

In the past three to four years, the United Way has raised from $185,000 to $200,000, he said. Last year, they raised $201,000, which was the second-highest total ever raised.

This year, the campaign kick-off date has been moved from Sept. 11 to Sept. 18. The Saturday evening event will be a music and family festival. The campaign director will be announced at that time, though the fundraising goal may not be.

The kick-off may be scaled back a bit, Clayton said, since there is no executive director and the United Way will need to use volunteer board members to help organize the event.

However, the group is looking for a new executive director and starting the process to post the position.

The Air Force Academy recently graduated their first openly gay cadets. What does this signify?

Nothing. There have always been gay cadets, they just haven't been open.
A step backward. Sexual orientation issues shouldn't be a part of the military.
A step forward. The military needs to be open to people of all backgrounds.
No opinion.
