PARKER COUNTY —

During the hottest part of the day Saturday, volunteer firefighters from Greenwood, Mountain River, Brock-Dennis, Millsap, Weatherford and Lipan responded to an out-of-control grass fire that started on Walker Lane in Brock. “I am most concerned about the firefighters and heat exhaustion, the temperature is sitting at 99 right now,” Ken Dabbs, deputy fire marshal for Parker County, said. Firefighters tried to keep one step ahead of the blazing fire as it ripped across nearly 50 acres of land, coming just behind Eric Kenney’s residence off of Lazy Bend. “It started out as a controlled burn,” Kenney said as he watched the firefighters keep his home from going up in smoke. Volunteers were on hand dispersing bottles of water for firefighters who came back to refill their tankers. For nearly four hours, and stopping only for brief breaks, firefighters returned with persistence and confidence back into the thick, wavering smoke. They continued to confront the blaze head-on, dealing with not only the fire, but the shifting of the wind.
