Hudson Oaks —
The highest paid city employee in Hudson Oaks is City Administrator Sheri Campbell-Husband, earning $88,245 a year.
Campbell-Husband said her job is a great learning experience and can recall the exact day she began working for the city — Nov. 13, 2008.
Civil service is nothing new to Campbell-Husband and she is proud to be from a long line of a “true public service family.”
Her father was a city administrator, her mother worked as a teacher, her brother is a city manager and her husband is a city planner.
“We are definitely municipal public service folks,” Campbell-Husband said laughing.
Although Campbell-Husband has not had any confirmation, she said she believes her father is the first city manager to have both children go into the public service profession.
“We’re something of an oddity and a legend all at one time,” she said.
Campbell-Husband arrives to work between 7:30 and 8 a.m. and directly supervises department heads for the city, which are the police chief, city secretary and assistant city administrator.
She also provides day-to-day direction for the administrative office staff at city hall.
Dealing with council relations is one of her biggest responsibilities by making sure council members have the information they need, Campbell-Husband said.
Working and helping council members with questions is important so they can provide their constituents with proper answers, she said.
“It’s dealing a lot with relationships and personalities,” Campbell-Husband said.
Much of her job as an administrator is dealing with public relations, also, she said.
Campbell-Husband has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in secondary education from the University of North Texas.
After teaching English for a while, she earned another master’s from the University of Arlington in public administration and decided to stay with public service as a profession.
The Mayor of Hudson Oaks, Pat Deen, said he proudly welcomed Campbell-Husband as administrator because of her level of excellence in public service.
“We have without a doubt, and no knock on previous administrations, the best management team in Hudson Oaks to challenge the state,” he said.
Any requests for public information is welcomed in the city, the mayor said.
“What’s golden with us is our transparency,” Deen said. “You’ll rarely see us adjourn for executive session, it’s all out in front.”
The open record requests are an opportunity to showcase the talent for those who work in the city and demonstrate how well things are run, he said.
Although the city has a small population, city employees operate professionally and have a management team of excellent caliber, Deen said.
“I can’t speak for what Aledo pays or what Willow Park pays their administrator, but I know through the Texas Municipal League, Sheri is on the low side of what we pay city administrators,” he said.
An average salary for city administrators in cities with a population of 5,000 or less is $100,494, Deen said. In the new municipal year, beginning in October, Sheri will be receiving a 5 percent salary increase in the proposed budget.
“She’s an incredible talent,” Deen said. “We’re lucky to have her and she’s done nothing but exceed our expectations by far with her leadership.”
