ALEDO —
A family of four was displaced Tuesday evening when their home in the 100 block of Alta Mesa Drive in east Parker County burned.
The fire occurred shortly after a house fire in Annetta South broke out around 2:30 p.m. destroying another family’s home.
Sean Vandercook said their two dogs and a bird were rescued from the burning two-story Alta Mesa house shortly after they arrived home to find their house in flames. However, firefighters believed the structure would be counted a total loss.
Many Parker County fire departments were already at the three-alarm Annetta South fire when they were called to the second structure fire of the afternoon.
Aledo Fire Chief Scott Mitchell said he could see the house fire, located north of White Settlement Road, when he got to Interstate 20.
“It was well-involved by the time it took to get here,” Mitchell said.
“We haven’t had a day like this in a while,” Mitchell said of the back-to-back house fires in the volunteer department’s area.
Twelve fire departments responded to the second three-alarm call, including a full alarm from Tarrant County, according to Mitchell.
Because of the intense 105-degree heat, fire crews, dressed in heavy firefighting gear, were working 10- to 15-minute shifts in between breaks to cool off and rehydrate.
The Red Cross, which provided cold drinks, shade and food to emergency responders and victims at both fires, made a trip to Weatherford to restock on ice between fires.
Sean Vandercook’s mother, sitting underneath an awning provided by the Red Cross, began crying when her son handed her a treasured piece of art that survived the fire.
The Vandercooks reportedly had insurance on the home.
The cause of the fire had not been determined Tuesday evening.
